Sense-itivity was the result of an intensive 6 week capstone project as a part of the human center design class called, The Art of Making.
Our Question: How might we create a low-cost solution to improve the atmosphere for hospital patients?
Typical hospital rooms are poorly designed and negatively impact patient health and recovery time. Maintaining a sense of control and stability, as well as a positive atmosphere, is important for people in this vulnerable state.
Our extensive user outreach showed that over ⅔ of people reported light, sound, or both to be an issue during their hospital stay.
The Sense-itivity system is a dynamic combination of user interfacing controls through an app and a light and sound producing device that generates ambient lighting and relaxing sounds.
User Feedback
“I can take a deep breath and let my body and mind sink.”
– UPMC patient
“Nature is natural and natural is healing.”
– UPMC patient
Throughout the duration of this project I served as the outreach coordinator, but contributed heavily to the user outreach, the design of the final project, and the final feedback as well.
